How to choose hosting and domain

In the previous video tutorials on «How to create your own website from scratch», we have created a website. Now let's think about domain and hosting. Choosing a domain name for your website can be an important decision, as it will impact your branding, marketing efforts, and search engine optimization (SEO). Here are some tips to help you choose the right domain.

  1. Brainstorm ideas: Start by brainstorming different ideas that relate to your business or the purpose of your website. You can start by writing down keywords or phrases that are relevant to your niche or industry.
  2. Make it easy to remember and spell. Choose a domain name that is easy to remember and spell. Avoid using hyphens or numbers, as they can make your domain name harder to remember.
  3. Make it brandable. Your domain name should reflect your brand and be unique. Ideally, it should be short, catchy, and memorable.
  4. Consider keywords. Consider including keywords related to your business or industry in your domain name. This can help with SEO and make it easier for potential customers to find you online.
  5. Check for availability. Before finalizing your domain name, make sure it is available. Use a domain registrar to search for available domain names and purchase your domain.
  6. Choose the right extension. The most common domain extension is «.com», but there are many other extensions available, such as «.net», «.org», «.co», «.io», and more. Choose an extension that best suits your website's purpose.
  7. Avoid trademark infringement: Make sure your domain name does not infringe on any existing trademarks. You can check for trademarks using the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) website.

Choosing a hosting provider can be a daunting task, but here are some factors to consider that can help you make an informed decision.

  1. Server uptime. Look for a hosting provider that guarantees high server uptime, ideally 99.9% or higher. This ensures that your website is accessible to visitors at all times.
  2. Speed and performance. Choose a hosting provider that has fast server response times and provides solid-state drives (SSDs) for faster website loading times.
  3. Security. Ensure that the hosting provider has security measures in place such as firewalls, DDoS protection, and malware scanning to keep your website safe from cyber threats.
  4. Scalability. Choose a hosting provider that can accommodate your website's growth, with options to upgrade or downgrade your hosting plan as needed.
  5. Customer support. Look for a hosting provider that offers responsive customer support, preferably 24/7, to help you resolve any issues that may arise.
  6. Cost. Consider the hosting provider's pricing structure and whether it fits within your budget. Keep in mind that the cheapest option may not always be the best one in terms of performance and reliability.
  7. Reviews. Read reviews from other customers to get a better idea of their experiences with the hosting provider

Why update Joomla?

Joomla is an open-source content management system (CMS) that powers millions of websites on the internet. Updating Joomla is essential to ensure that your website stays secure, stable, and up-to-date with the latest features and improvements. Here are some reasons why you should update Joomla.

  1. Security. Updating Joomla ensures that your website is protected from security vulnerabilities and attacks. Joomla releases security updates regularly to patch any vulnerabilities that may be discovered, and failing to update your website can leave it exposed to malicious attacks.
  2. Stability. Updating Joomla can improve the stability and performance of your website. Updates often include bug fixes and improvements to the core system, which can help prevent issues that may impact the functionality and usability of your website.
  3. Features. Joomla updates often introduce new features and functionalities that can improve the user experience of your website. Keeping your website up-to-date can ensure that you have access to the latest features and tools that Joomla has to offer.
  4. Compatibility. Updating Joomla can ensure that your website remains compatible with the latest web technologies and standards. Failing to update your website may result in compatibility issues with third-party extensions, plugins, and modules that your website relies on.

In summary, updating Joomla is important for maintaining the security, stability, and functionality of your website. It is recommended to regularly check for updates and apply them as soon as possible.
