Contacts – is a contact component built into Joomla. It allows you to create pages with contact information and free Joomla contact form. You can also create pages with a list of contacts or a form for adding them. You can protect the form from spam using a captcha, expand the page with additional fields and configure it quite flexibly. Joomla 5 does not have built-in captcha. But you can use free third-party plugins.
There is a new component in Joomla for editing emails - Mail Templates.

Joomla 5 captcha
Joomla 6.1 added a built-in captcha that works without external services or APIs.
At the moment (November 10, 2023) in the Joomla Extensions Directory, I have selected two free captcha plugins for Joomla 5. These plugins can be used not only for the contact form, but also for the registration form and other forms that are supported by Joomla «captcha» type plugins.
«reCAPTCHA v3» (picture below). Free plugin for Joomla 5 and 4. This plugin does not require the «Behaviour - Backward Compatibility» plugin to work. But you need to get the keys in the reCAPTCHA admin console for this plugin.
«Friendly Captcha» (picture below). Free plugin for Joomla 5, 4 and 3. But it's free for non-commercial use only. If you are using it on a commercial site, please see the subscription price. For this plugin to work you need to get the keys from the developer’s website.
Joomla Contacts
I will give a short list of steps for setting up contacts. Not all of them are mandatory.
- Create contact categories. This is not necessary if you do not plan to display the category of contacts on the site. You can use one default category.
- Configure Joomla Mail Sending. You can learn more about this in the article «Joomla tutorial for beginners (part 5). How to build a website from scratch for free». In this video tutorial you will see Joomla 4, but the information is also relevant for Joomla 5.
- Create a contact (picture below).
- Create a menu item to display the contact on the site.
- Check the display and operation of the contact on the site. If necessary, make changes to the general settings of the Contacts component, to the settings of a category, a menu item, or a contact.
Contact page recommendations
Creating an effective Contact page on your website is crucial for providing a seamless way for visitors to get in touch with you. Here are some recommendations for a well-optimized Contact page:
- Ensure that your contact information is easy to find. Display your phone number, email address, and physical address prominently.
- Consider using a simple and clean design to enhance readability.
- Include a contact form that visitors can fill out. Keep the form fields to a minimum to encourage submissions.
- Clearly label required fields and provide helpful hints or tooltips for each field.
- Use a clear and compelling call-to-action that prompts visitors to get in touch. For example, «Contact Us», «Get in Touch» or «Reach Out to Us».
- Make the CTA (Call-to-Action) button visually distinct and easily clickable.
- If your business has a physical location, consider integrating a map to help visitors find your office easily.
- Include a link for directions or a brief description of your location.
- Include your business hours to manage visitor expectations regarding when they can expect a response.
- If applicable, provide links to your social media profiles. This can offer visitors additional ways to connect with your business.
- Assure visitors that their contact information is secure and won't be shared with third parties. Include a link to your privacy policy.
- Offer multiple ways for visitors to reach you, such as phone, email, and a contact form. Different people prefer different communication methods.
- Consider adding a photo and a brief bio of key contacts, like customer support or sales representatives. This adds a personal touch and helps build trust.
- Set up an automatic confirmation or thank-you page to reassure visitors that their message has been received. You can also provide an estimate of when they can expect a response.
- Ensure that your Contact page is mobile-friendly, as many users may be accessing your site from smartphones or tablets.
- Regularly test your contact forms to ensure they are functioning correctly. Broken forms can result in missed opportunities and frustrated visitors.
- Use a friendly and approachable tone in your contact information and form instructions. Make it easy for users to understand how to reach out to you.
By incorporating these recommendations, you can create a Contact page that not only provides essential information but also encourages visitors to engage with your business.
As you can see, setting up contacts in Joomla is quite a simple process. Disadvantages of the component: lack of a module, there is no easy way to disable form fields, you need to install a third-party captcha plugin (in Joomla 5.0).
I think that the form should contain as few fields as possible (considering the purpose of the form). For example, I left only two fields on my site: «Email» and «Message». I think that the «Name» and «Subject» fields are unnecessary fields. The subject can be created automatically, and the name can be written in the «Message» field.
I hope this and other Joomla video tutorials have helped you with this CMS. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments.
