The meaning of categories and subcategories in Joomla. This information is relevant for Joomla 1.0 - 4.x.
Categories are designed to combine articles «by topic». One category can contain one or more articles. Categories are the equivalent of folders in Windows and other operating systems, and articles are the files inside those folders.
Categories allow you to filter articles in the admin panel and on the site. You can use menu items or a module to display categories. There are many modules (built-in and from third-party developers) that allow you to display articles from categories.
Categories can be nested within each other to create a hierarchy of categories. Nested categories are called «subcategories» (or «child»). They used for better articles structuring.

In the next video tutorial, we will look at Joomla menu. We will look at the management, creation and general settings of menu items. We will also talk about the menu module.
