Joomla template is an extension that provides website design. All fonts, colors, layout (location of various elements), indents, shadows, gradients, etc. are included in template. There are templates for the Joomla admin (control panel) and for the site (the part that all visitors see).
Most modern templates also include animations for opening menus, pages appearing, and so on. Some paid templates sometimes include «additional functionality». For example: page scroll button, following buttons, Off-Canvas menu, and so on.
Unfortunately, asingle template cannot provide an equally good look for any Joomla component or module, as it has a limited number of styles. Template contains styles for most extensions built into Joomla and for some specific ones that it is designed for. For example, for VirtueMart.
Positions for modules are also provided in the template. Many modern templates from popular developers include many template settings, from changing the site logo to a layout designer (module positions). For example – RSCapri.

Difference between Joomla template and style
In the System section of the administration area, there are links to Site Templates and Site Template Styles (pictured below). Please note that the following template and style definitions may be imprecise, incomplete, and may not cover all cases.
Joomla template is a set of PHP, CSS, JS, PNG, SVG and other files that contain the source code of the site's design. The composition and number of files depends on each specific template. Template files may include a Joomla style settings file. Website can have one or more templates. A template can have one or more styles. You can use template to create overrides.
Joomla style is a set of settings for Joomla templates (figure below). Settings can be stored in the site database or among template files. If the template developers provide any settings, they are in the styles. Styles can be attached to menu items. Different menu items may have different styles, or maybe one style for all menu items. In most cases you work with a template to change its settings and this does not require programming skills, unlike when changing template source code (creating overrides).
