Joomla 5.0 CMS is a version of the Joomla content management system, which was released on October 17, 2023. It has a number of updates to improve security, accessibility, speed and other «areas». Most of the changes are code related.

In the previous free video tutorials, we created website on Joomla 4 from scratch. We used only free components. The result was a business website, which was uploaded to the hosting.

The previously recorded video tutorials for Joomla 4 are almost completely relevant for the current version of Joomla 5.0. At least this is valid on November 03, 2023.

In this article, we will talk about the «biggest» changes in Joomla 5.0 compared to version 4.3.

In the video you will see Joomla 5.0 on local server with PHP 8.1 and MySQL 8.0.30.

The article uses information from the official site – «Joomla 5.0 and Joomla 4.4 are here!».

Changes in Joomla 5.0

Please note that upgrading Joomla 3 to 4 is a much longer, more complex and expensive process than upgrading from Joomla 4 to 5. You can find out more about upgrading from Joomla 4 to 5 in the official documentation «Joomla 4.4.x to 5. x Planning and Upgrade Step by Step».

Minimum system requirements update. Here are new system requirements for Joomla 5 hosting:

  • PHP – 8.1.0 (with json, simplexml, dom, gd, mysqlnd or pgsql modules).
  • MySQL 8.0.13, or MariaDB 10.4.0, or PostgreSQL 12.0.
  • Apache 2.4 or Nginx 1.21 or Microsoft IIS – 10.

You can find out more on the official website.

Joomla admin night mode. Now administrators can enable the «dark mode» of the admin panel (picture below). Joomla 5.1 now has a theme switch in the admin menu.

To enable the dark mode («night mode») of the Joomla 5 admin panel, enable the appropriate mode in the settings of your browser or operating system.

Integration with Schema.org (structured data). In Joomla 5, 7 plugins (schemaorg type) were added to implement the following types of micro markup. Two more plugins have been added to Joomla 5.1.

In the settings of each plugin, you can select the components that will be affected by this plugin. Currently available Contacts and Articles components.

There is also a plugin «System - Schema.org» (picture below).

Improvements to increase speed and reduce load on hosting (server):

  • Caching improvements.
  • Source code optimization.

Other updates and changes:

  • Improved compatibility with PHP 8+.
  • Bootstrap version updated to 5.3.2.
  • The version of the Codemirror editor has been updated to 6.
  • The version of the TinyMCE visual text editor has been updated to 6.7. Added the ability to set alignment in image settings.
  • AVIF support has been added to the media manager.
  • All smart search plugins now have the ability to exclude elements in archives and individual taxonomy areas from indexing. For example, for Articles, you can exclude articles in the archive, as well as the following taxonomic data: author, category, language and type.
  • Added the ability to sort menus similar to sorting menu items.
  • ReCAPTCHA plugins have been removed.
  • Added Fontawesome 6.4 support.
  • Many code changes to improve security and speed of Joomla.
  • Added the «Behaviour - Backward Compatibility» plugin, which allows you to ensure compatibility with the Joomla 5 and some Joomla 4 extensions and templates that use outdated code.

Changes in Joomla 4.4

There are no special changes in Joomla 4.4. This version is needed to make it easier the upgrade from version 4 to version 5.

It is assumed that all Joomla 4 extensions and templates, that do not use legacy code, will work with Joomla 5 (even without the «Behaviour - Backward Compatibility» plugin).

As you can see, quite a lot of changes have been made in Joomla 5. Most of them concern code and are should increase speed, security, stability and compatibility of the CMS with new software products. In turn, this allows developers to create more modern extensions and templates. This can help you create a better website in less time.

Considering minimal changes in terms of the admin interface and site management logic, all video tutorials and instructions previously recorded for Joomla 4 are relevant for Joomla 5.

In the next article «How to update Joomla 4 to 5. Using Aleksius.biz website as an example» we will look at an example of updating Joomla 4.3 to 5.0
